![]() You nominated and we listened! We sat down with Vincent Gerace, owner of Robert Stanley Asphalt Maintenance located in Mount Joy, PA to learn more about his local business success and what stands Robert Stanely apart from all the other asphalt paving companies in Lancaster PA. Read on to learn about Vincent’s story and Robert Stanely’s history! (If you know a great local business to feature in the Lancaster Review, call us at 717-366-9443). Lancaster Review: When did you start your business? Robert Stanley Asphalt Maintenance: Well it was originally started in 1978 by Robert Stanely, and I bought the business in 2008. I kept the name because there was good name recognition Lancaster Review: What was it that made you want to start this business? Robert Stanley Asphalt Maintenance: I used to work evenings and nights, I had children at the time, and switched professions to be home in evenings with my kids. Robert Stanley was the business who sealcoated my house at the time so I called him up and ended up buying his business. Lancaster Review: What was the toughest thing you went through when opening? Robert Stanley Asphalt Maintenance: I didn’t find it terribly difficult. You have to put your nose to the grind stone and learn how to seal which is not rocket science. I got onto Angie’s List early on (after I saw one of their advertisements on TV). That’s been a great source of advertising for us. I’d request reviews, and since we did good work people left good reviews. I was also on HomeAdvisor for years and years. I liked Angie’s List’s advertising structure better and how they set it up. I pay a monthly fee rather than by the lead unlike with HomeAdvisor, we’d pay per lead which I didn't care for. ![]() Lancaster Review: If you had to start over from day 1 what would you have done differently? Robert Stanley Asphalt Maintenance: I don't know if I would do anything differently. I'm very pleased with how things have turned out. Lancaster Review: What is the toughest part about having a business in 2021? Robert Stanley Asphalt Maintenance: We got off to a late start because of Covid. We did actually very well all things considered. I didn’t have too many difficulties. Got lots of work in, stayed warm enough, and worked until the beginning of November. We also predict people are tending toward maintenance of their asphalt versus paving because of the economic climate. Lancaster Review: What makes your business different from all the other businesses in your niche? Robert Stanley Asphalt Maintenance: Because of the quality. People's houses are one of their biggest investments. Last thing they need is a house messed up with overspray or whatever by a company that’s not as careful as we are. That’s the reason why we get as many reviews as we do. We're a Christian-owned company, we're personable, we treat everyone's property as if it was our own. Lancaster Review: Has the Internet played a big roll in your business as it has become more prevalent? Robert Stanley Asphalt Maintenance: Absolutely. The advertising capabilities of it. People leave Google reviews, it doesn’t cost you anything to go on Facebook. People Google us. Occasionally my son will advertise on Facebook so people will get our ad on their homepage when they log on. My son and my internet guru understand all the technology that goes with that. Lancaster Review: If you had to look 6 months to a year into the future where would you like to see your business be?
Robert Stanley Asphalt Maintenance: Obviously, the commercial end of it is what we’d like to do more of. Just like any business, the larger jobs you get the more profitable it is that’s why we’re endeavoring more toward commercial jobs rather than just residential. Pass it off to my son, because I’m getting old. I’ll be 67 next week. My son is taking over most of the business. He’s the one that has more of the vision of growing it.
